<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably manufacture a battery which controls composition of a negative electrode active material when forming the negative electrode active material on a current collector and has characteristics with smaller variations including its capacity. <P>SOLUTION: In a method of manufacturing a negative electrode for a battery, an active material layer including a metal element M and an element A which is at least either oxygen, nitrogen, or carbon is formed on a current collector 11. This active material layer is put under an X-ray irradiation, and at least either intensity of a Kα ray of the element A or intensity of a Kα ray of the metal element M in fluorescent X rays generated from the active material layer is measured.
