PURPOSE:Finely porous hollow fiber of hydrophobic polymer is brought into contact with a mixed gas of fluorine and oxygen to effect reaction, whereby COF groups are introduced into polymer chains to make the hollow fiber hydrophilic permanently. CONSTITUTION:Finely porous hollow fiber, which is made from a hydrophobic polymer such as polypropylene, preferably has 50-5,000Angstrom average pore size and more than 20% porosity, is brought into contact with a mixed gas consisting of fluorine, oxygen and an inert gas such as nitrogen, preferably at the volume ratio of (1-30):(0.1-20):(50-98), at room temperature for longer than 5sec. This reaction introduced acid fluoride group (COF) of the formula into polymer chains and the hydrolysis of the introduced groups readily makes the hollow fiber hydrophilic. |
