This method and device are intended to make it possible to eliminate, on the one hand, the friction between a standing and a moving measuring part and, on the other hand, to improve the accuracy and form of indication. The method for this purpose is distinguished by the fact that pulses coming from a magnet rotating with the running wheel are supplied via a receiver, for example a reed contact or the like, to a computer and the latter calculates the linear distance in dependence on the size of the running wheel and its revolutions and outputs this distance to a digital display. The device comprises at least one pulse transmitter permanently connected to the running wheel, the path of movement of which is associated with a receiver which is stationary with respect to the rotational movement, for example a reed contact or the like which is connected to a digital display via a microprocessor or the like. <IMAGE>
