PURPOSE:To use a dihydropyridine compound or its salt well-known as a vasodilator as an antiarateriosclerotic agent. CONSTITUTION:An antiarteriosclerotic agent containing a dihydropyridine compound shown by the formula (R<1> is nitrophenyl; R<2>, R<3>, and R<4> are lower alkyl) or its salt acceptable as a drug. 6-Cyano-5-methoxycarbonyl-2-methyl-4-(3- nitrophenyl)-1, 4-dihydropyridine-3-carboxylic acid isopropyl ester is cited as a concrete example of the compound shown by the formula. The compound shown by the formula has antiarteriosclerotic action besides well-known vasodilating action. The compound is effective for remedying and preventing arteriosclerosis (e.g., atherosclerosis, hypertensive arteriosclerosis, Monkeberg's arteriosclerosis, etc.), further cardiovascular diseases such as angina pectoris, myocardial infarction and hypertension.
