To the inner wall of the silica tube 1 of the arc lamp is welded a ring 7, also of silica, arranged around the cathode 2 so that the tapered end 3 of the cathode projects, by a few millimetres, through the ring 7, towards the inside of the tube. Because of the barrier formed by the ring 7, the initiating arc 9 is forced to arise on the sharp portion 3 of the cathode, at a sufficient distance from the wall of the tube 1 to preclude the deterioration of the latter. The invention applies to continuous-emission arc lamps serving as optical pumping sources for lasers. <IMAGE>
