PURPOSE:To enable transfer ribbons of various ingredients to be used, by a method wherein a carriage is provided with a relative means which relatively moves a printing head and a ribbon guide in a printing direction to vary the distance between a printing element and the ribbon guide. CONSTITUTION:With use of a thermal transfer ribbon R not requiring a comparatively long time for an ink layer 42 to adhere to a printing paper P after being melted by a heating element 26, turning of a dial 37 by an operator in a direction Arrow A results in a short distance in a printing direction between a printing head 23 and a ribbon guide 34, thus enabling setting of a transfer distance La suitable to the thermal transfer ribbon R in use. On the other hand, with use of the thermal transfer ribbon R requiring a relatively long time for the ink layer 42 to adhere on the printing paper P after being melted by the heating element 26, turning of the dial 37 in a direction of Arrow C by the operator results in a long distance in the printing direction between the printing head 23 and the ribbon guide 34, thus realizing setting of a transfer distance Lb adequate for the thermal transfer ribbon R in use. |
