A control system for use in an automatic transmission (2) which is connected to an engine (1) comprises: a fluid coupling (7) for transmitting a torque between an input member (5) and an output member (6); a lock-up clutch (8) adapted to be selectively engaged with and released from the input member (5); and a variable capacity type viscous coupling (9) arranged in series between the lock-up clutch (8) and the output member (6). The control system comprises: a lock-up detector (11) for detecting that the lock-up clutch (8) is engaged; an output state detector (10) for detecting an output state of the engine (1); a torque transmission capacity determiner (12) for determining a torque transmission capacity of the variable capacity type viscous coupling (9) in accordance with the output state of the engine (1) which is detected by the output state detector (10), if the lock-up detecting means (11) detects that the lock-up clutch (8) is engaged; and a mechanism (12) for setting the torque transmission capacity of the variable capacity type viscous coupling (9) to said determined torque transmission capacity. <IMAGE> |
