The sheets (P) are stood up in vertical compartments (1) inside a shelving unit (R). A vehicle with a sheet support section (PA) is used to lift or lower sheets vertically into or out of storage and then transport the sheets horizontally or vertically to a processing station, preferably a saw or cutter. The lifting or lowering of the sheets into or out of the compartments is computer-controlled according to the size of the sheet that has left the processing station and whether it will need further processing.
