Use of multiple gel capillaries for electrophoresis

A confinement electric field is applied to the electrophoresis capillaries, just before the fluorescence detector (6) to keep the molecules near the axis of the capillary and prevent them diverging. Alternate capillaries in the band are used, the others having no opening.
