PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To discriminate whether the distance between one object and the other object is within a prescribed value or more than that based on the frequency at which a light receiving part detects reflected light. SOLUTION: The position detecting device comprises a projector 12 which is provided on the other object 36 to project light in one direction, a plurality of reflectors 16 that are so provided on one object 20 as spaced in the direction across the projection direction of the projector 12 for reflecting light, and a light receiving part which is provided on the other object 36 to detect the light of the projector 12 which is reflected by the reflector. If the distance between one object 20 and the other object 36 is less than a prescribed value L, the radiation width of light of the projector 12 that hits one object 20 is less than the distance between the reflectors 16. Here, the projector 12 moves relatively in the array direction of the reflector 16 and in the direction across the projecting direction.
