PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce frequency of occurrence of knocking and frequency of unnecessary drop of output torque. SOLUTION: Base ignition timing is set according to load and engine speed NE. Ignition timing is controlled at intervals Nint to be retarded from base ignition timing. At least one of the interval Nint for retarding ignition timing and retarded angle quantity Qrtd of ignition timing are changed according to at least one of engine speed NE and engine load.
