The device (1) has a short-circuit switch (7) comprising a normally closed contact that is switched to open-circuit before a contact of a starter switch (5) is switched to closed-circuit, and switched to closed-circuit after the starter switch contact is switched to closed-circuit. The short-circuit switch is closed to short-circuit a resistor (6) that is in series connection with the starter switch. The starter switch is connected in series between a power supply i.e. battery (3), and an electric starter motor (2). A timer circuit (8) controls opening and closing of the short-circuit switch.
