PURPOSE:To produce 2-ethyl-6-methylnaphthalene useful as a raw material for 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid for magnetic tape, etc., at a low production cost. CONSTITUTION:A methylnaphthalene such as 2-methylnaphthalene is alkylated (trans-ethylated) with a polyethylbenzene to obtain 2-ethyl-6-methylnaphthalene. The polyethylbenzene to be used in the process is triethylbenzene, tetraethylbenzene or polyethylbenzene composed mainly of the tri or tetraethylbenzene having an (ethyl group/benzene ring) molar ratio of >=2.5 and the alkylation is carried out in the presence of a solid acid catalyst such as zeolite or silica alumina. 2-Ethyl-6-methylnaphthalene can be produced in high selectivity with little formation of isomers. |
