1,093,179. Exhaust-silencers. CORNING GLASS WORKS. March 11, 1965 [March 16, 1964], No.10391/65. Heading FIB. A silencer comprises a ceramic casing 48-50 containing porous ceramic elements 62-67 each formed with numerous, axial, open passages of small cross-sectional area. Alternate annular and disc-like ceramic baffles 60, 61 which close some of the passages of each element, provide a sinuous path for exhaust gases flowing from inlet 54 to outlet 55. Cavities 58 may be cut in the inlet surface of the closed-passage portion of one or more of the elements. The elements are secured within the casing by ceramic cement. An example of the chemical constituents of and a method of making the ceramic casing, elements and cement is disclosed in the Specification. The dimensions of various parts of the silencer are also disclosed. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), adjacent circular elements are connected by rectangular elements disposed in a plane containing the silencer axis. Alternate semicircular portions of the circular elements on opposite sides of the rectangular elements are provided with baffles, and the end portions of the rectangular elements adjacent the circular elements are provided with baffles on their upper surfaces thus providing a sinuous exhaust gas path. |
