The ferric iron content of a basic refractory material, containing a compound comprising ferric iron and oxygen, is chemically reduced prior to the formation of a carbon-bonded refractory article. The refractory material is preferably dead-burned calcium oxide and/or magnesium oxide. The ferric iron content is preferably reduced to 5-30% by weight of the total iron content. The reduction is carried out with a gaseous reducing agent such as methane, ethane, propane, ethylene, refinery gas or natural gas or with a solid reducing agent such as carbon, aluminium or magnesium. |
