The method for manufacturing a shadow mask for the color cathode ray tube comprises (a) installing a mask (3) in a vacuum container (5), (b) depositing aluminium, which is vaporized from a vaporizer (6), on the surface of the mask, and (c) forming aluminium nitride film on the aluminium film by blowing nitrogen gas at the ending stage of deposition. The thickness of aluminium film and aluminium nitride film is each 0.1-10 μM. In the process (c), nitrogen gas is supplied at 10-1 torr for 0.1-5 mins. The produced shadow mask can prevent the temperature rise and thermal expansion of the mask and enhance the color purity of the screen.
