An aqueous electro-chemical machining electrolyte solution of pH 7-10 comprises 100 to 2000 parts of water, 0À01 to 50 parts of sequestering agent and 100 parts of alkali metal chlorate, all parts being by weight, wherein the sequestering agent is at least one of a condensed alkali metal phosphate (that is a phosphate containing at least two phosphorus atoms in each molecule), an aminocarboxylic acid, a salt thereof, a hydroxy acid, a salt thereof and an organic sequestering agent containing phosphorus. The solution may be made up by adding to water a dry composition having appropriate quantities of the constituents. The solution reduces sludge formation during use. Many specific examples of the above mentioned compounds are given. The electro-chemical machining may be used in combination with mechanical machining, milling,drilling, grinding or polishing. Specified electro-chemical machining conditions are:- a gap between the workpiece and tool of 0À001 to 2 inches, a voltage of 1 to 48 volts and a current density of 100 to 6000 amps/ sq. in. The workpiece may be Fe, Ni, Co, U, Cd, Cu, Al, Be, Pb, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ge or Sn, or an alloy containing at least one of these metals which may also contain C, Si, P, S, N or Na. In Examples 1 to 7 a graphite cathode tool is used in machining a steel anode workpiece and in Example 8 the workpiece is a high Cr steel alloy. |
