[Also in Division F2] A thrust producing means for propelling rockets, or, air water and underwater craft, comprises a tubular housing 1 with a curved bearing surface 2 providing a seating for a complementary surface on a nozzle 3. During operation a pressurized sealing fluid is introduced between the surfaces by a series of circumferentially spaced radial passages 5 fed by a duct 7. An annular seal 4 extends around the bearing surface between the downstream end thereof and the ports 6 of the passages 5. An annular driving ring 8 rotatable by means of gear teeth 10, engages an arm 11 on nozzle 3 for rotating the nozzle about the housing's axis and the ring 8 also carries an actuator 12 to tilt the nozzle. Alternatively, universal swivelling can be achieved by two double acting actuators connected to the nozzle at 90 degrees with respect to each other. The pressurizing fluid, which lubricates, cools, and seals the bearings against leakage, may be a propellant for a combustion chamber of a rocket engine; the flow of sealing fluid being synchronized with the engine firing sequence. |
