[Also in Division C4] A target for a C.R.T. comprises a transparent back-plate 11 and a storage surface 12 formed of an evaporated alkali-halide film and one or more conductors for discharging the alkali-halide and for heating it to erase stored information, wherein the, or one of the conductors, and the alkali halide are adjacent one surface of the backplate such that the film is divided in a regular or irregular fashion into a plurality of distinct sections to inhibit its peeling off. The alkali halide may be NaCl, KCl or KBr with F-band absorption due to F-centres at 4580, 5560 and 6250 Š respectively. In the storage device, Fig. 1 (not shown), the glass or mica plate 11 carries an electrically resistant material connected to electrodes (15, 151) for heating beneath KCl storage layer (12) which is translucent and may be in a light reflecting or transmitting device. Light may be transmitted through the screen from source (16) through filter (17), and reflected by mirror (13). Glass back-plate 11 may be 50 to 500 Á thick to satisfy thermal capacity requirements, peeling of the storage surface from the back-plate due to differences in thermal expansion being inhibited by the minute sectioning, and a conductive film, parallel lines or wire grill preventing charging, while the evaporated storage layer may be of one micron crystals and 10 or 12À5 microns thick. In Figs. 2a, 2b (not shown), conductive paint, evaporated or plated electrodes (21, 21<SP>1</SP>) are connected by parallel wires (22) or grill (22<SP>1</SP>) e.g. of 10 Á or less thickness and 20 Á pitch. In fabrication, Cr and photo-resist are deposited in turn, covered with a mask and U.V. exposed. Further Ni deposition may be by plating or evaporation, KCl being evaporated in vacuum or Ar. Conductive film (23) may be included between the wires and back-plate. In Figs. 4a, 4b (not shown), the back-plate may include channels (24) with lands (24<SP>1</SP>) and stannic oxide films (25, 25<SP>1</SP>) need not be transparent in the channels. Further heating element (2511) may be included. The storage surface may alternatively be formed by the application of separate conductive films, or separate alkali halide films, e.g. by evaporation through a mask (29) (Fig. 5, not shown). To increase adhesion, the surface may be sandblasted (Fig. 6, not shown) and surface roughness of several to several tens of microns is specified. The storage device may be as in Fig. 7 (not shown) utilizing an annular fluorescent lamp (16a) for viewing and a sand-blasted, milky, magnesium oxide or alkali halide covered glass for the C.R.T. to facilitate viewing. The electron gun (14b) may be at an angle to the longitudinal axis (Fig. 8, not shown).
