The invention comprises complex hydrocarbon/metal halide polymers of formula <FORM:1093457/C3/1> or <FORM:1093457/C3/2> where M is a metal of Groups V, VI, VII or VIII of the Periodic Table which is capable of forming a metal carbonyl, p is the valency of the metal M, X is a halogen atom, n is an integer (e.g. 1,500 to 5,000), and R and R1 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkaryl groups which may be halogenated. The polymers are obtained by reacting halogenated olefins and halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons with metal carboxyls in solvents at 0 DEG to 250 DEG C. When contacted with water the polymers lose the metal halide and form polymers containing no metal halide. In examples polymers are obtained by reacting 1,4-dichlorobutene-2, 3,4-dichlorobutene - 1, 1,4 - dichlorobutene - 1 and o ,o - p - dichloroxylene with nickel carbonyl and iron carbonyl, and the products are contacted with water to obtain hydrocarbon polymers. |
