991,772. Abrasive tools. J. H. MACKAY, and M. J. McKELLAR. March 5, 1962 [March 15, 1961], No. 8459/62. Heading B3D. The abrasive component of a rotary finishing tool consists of a metallic drive member, adapted for engagement with a support member, to which the abrasive finishing element, e.g. abrasive fabric coated with aluminium oxide, is bonded by means of a layer of thermoplastic material such as polyvinyl chloride. In a preferred tool and support member (see Fig. 7), tabs 45-47 of the support member engage openings 34, 34a and 34b of the tool (see also Fig. 9) in such a manner that when the support member is rotated, surface 61 of tab 45 is forced into line contact with edge 36 of the opening 34 and is allowed no lateral movement (see Fig. 10), surface 61 and edge 36 being substantially the same length (less than edge 35). The tool, as shown in Fig. 6, consists of metallic drive member 31 coated with polyvinyl chloride 23a on the underside of the flange member 33, which has been heat bonded to an abrasive fabric, the backing of which had also previously been coated with polyvinyl chloride. |
