The means of controlling the system according to the invention, are capable, prior to the execution of a predetermined task, of: - controlling the displacement of first (3, 4) and of second (5, 6; 7, 8) mobile means, by the intermediary of driving means (13, 14, 15), to a command position, - receiving information from detection means (32, 33) mounted on the said first (3, 4) and second (5, 6, 7, 8) mobile means, for measuring the difference between the real position of the said first (3, 4) and second (5, 6, 7, 8) mobile means and the said command position, - processing the said information and controlling, as a function of the said information, the displacement of the said articulated arm or arms (10) in order to bring the said working unit (11) into the said reference position. The invention applies in particular to painting heavy transport aircraft.
