In an electric iron, the main hollow handle part 2 to which the cable is secured is connected by a hook connection 17, 18 and a single screw 19 to a cover plate 6 secured to the, e.g. aluminium, sole plate 1 and carrying contact strips 12, 13 attached to the end of the cable leads. The connection comprises projections 17 which engage recesses 18 in plate 6. Plate 6 which carries the thermostat control knob 8 has a part 22 forming a rest for the iron when up-ended. The handle comprises two portions 4, 5 connected by inter-fitting parts 33, 34 one of which is sufficiently resilient to ensure a good fit. The heating element may be pressed into the aluminium sole plate or a tubular heating element may be soldered to a steel sole plate. |
