As a break occurs in a group of filaments e.g. fibres, when clamps holding the fibres are moved apart a series of impulses are produced in one of the clamps which are converted into electrical signals and the number of series of impulses recorded. In the embodiment described the impulse pickup consists of a microphone having a magnet with a fixed coil and a diaphragm between the magnet and the clamp. The impulse pickup delivers a damped sine wave signal via an amplifier and threshold device through an inverter and shaper where it is converted into a negative pulse. This is then converted into a short square wave signal which controls a counter or graph recorder. The apparatus may be used for measuring the strength of linen material or tyres. |
