[Also in Division B3] A method of welding together workpieces such as pipe-line lengths comprises: establishing a gap, preferably of uniform width, throughout the length of the weld; feeding a gas-shielded wire electrode at uniform speed into the gap; establishing an arc within the gap; and supplying a substantially constant current, varying by no more than Œ2% to the arc whilst permitting the applied voltage to vary within gated limits of no more than Œ10% to maintain an effective arc and uniform weld penetration. A suitable constant current circuit is described with reference to Fig. 3 (not shown), the exciting current of a welding generator being varied in dependence upon welding current variations by a control circuit including relays responsive to such variations. |
