[Also in Division A2] Apparatus for cutting paper webs such as cigarette tipping material comprises a rotatable cutter head 1 adjacent a conveyer drum 6, Fig. 2. The cutter head 1, which may carry four cutters 2, is mounted on a rotatable shaft 7, Fig. 1, for limited universal movement about a point on the shaft so that the head can align itself with the conveyer surface at each cutting operation. As described, a ring 8 is attached to a generally spherical part of the shaft by a cross-pin 9, and to the body of the head by stub pins 10, Fig. 3. The holes in the body are larger than the pin 9 to permit relative movement. The shaft is rotated by an anti-backlash gear 11, 11A journalled on a shaft 14, connected to the shaft 7 by a flexible spring coupling 15 and dog coupling arrangement 30. The bores in the cradle ends are eccentric to the bores housing the ball-races 18 for the shaft 7, and thus the cutting knives may be adjusted closer or further from the drum surface by turning a bush 22 by means of a tommy bar 29. This turns a support stub 19, which in turn rotates a cradle 17 mounted on the support stub. A graduated sector plate 27 and datum mark on the flange of the bush 22 facilitate adjustment. To detach the cradle and cutter head the tommy bar 29 is pulled out, turned at right angles to the stub and pulled against the pressure of a spring 28. A web is fed to the cutter by rollers 5 which rotate more slowly than the drum, and is held on the drum by suction through holes in the periphery of the drum.</p> |
