Glass contains ionogenic material. A heating electrode projects into the furnace & is of material which is destructively attacked by the ions. the electrode is supplied with ac. current with a dc. component, the polarity being chosen to repel the ions. Preferably the electrode resists anions & O2, & is positive; it is of Pt, or a refractory ceramic oxide such as Sn oxide; or is Mo or graphite; it resists cations.
