Compds. are cont. produced by continuous esterifn. of phthalic anhydride by excess butan-1-ol or butan-2-ol, in the absence of esterifn. catalyst, at elevated press. Reaction comprises 2 stages. The first is reacting phthalic anhydride with 0l8-1.2 moles, then, in the 2 nd stage with a further 1.3-2.0 moles of butanol. The press. is adjusted so that the esterifn. Mixture boils in both stages, at 150-250 degrees C.
