A method of forming fibre-containing polymeric sheet material capable of being thermoformed or cold pressed includes the steps of forming a paste by mixing a natural or syn thetic polymeric particulate solid with a binder, preparing a fibrous pulp, preparing a furnish by mixing the paste with the pulp in a ratio by wt. of solids from 25% paste to 75% fibre to 75% paste to 25% fibre, draining the furnish on a foraminous screen, and drying. The particulate solid may be acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, polyethylene, or a mixture thereof, or an epoxy or phenol formaldehyde resin, or mixture thereof. The binder may be a natural or synthetic polymer e.g. styrene-butadiene, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, urea or melamine formaldehyde resin, guar gum, starch, or pectin. The fibres may be of wood, cotton, asbestos, polyamide, polyester, carbon, glass, rayon, metal, or mixtures thereof. A precipitant e.g. alum, or chrysotile asbestos may be mixed with the fibrous pulp. Conventional additives e.g. antioxidants, plasticizers, fillers, surface-active agents may be used in the preparation of the paste. The surface active agent may be an ethoxylated alkyl phenol. The drained and dried sheet material may be stabilised as it leaves the paper-making machine by being subjected to heat and pressure to form a surface skin. This may be done by a hot rolling process or in a laminating press. |
