Sterilized fluid food is aseptically packaged into sterile flexible packages, and sealed, in a sterile environment, the package having a detachable sample portion in order to test sterility. As described a supply of bags 15 such as polyethylene is stacked in a chamber 12, which is subsequently sterilized with steam and a suitable sterilizing gas such as ethylene oxide. After gas removal by the application of a vacuum, the chamber is filled with sterilized air at a temperature of 15-30‹ C. Pre-sterilized fluid food is then alternately passed through a conduit via a valve 10 to one or other of two fillings nozzles 11, to which the bags 15 are manually attached using gloves 14 secured to openings 13. After filling, a seal 29, Fig. 2, such as foil backed polyethylene is applied to the spout opening of the bag by means of the heat sealing device 16, after which the bag is removed from the chamber 12 by passing it through a bactericidal liquid trap 17 such as chlorinated tap water. The filled bags 15 are randomly checked for sterility by double heat sealing one corner of the bag which is subsequently removed for testing. Germ culture packages 23 consisting of filter paper discs, containing bacterial spores, placed in a bag are used in order to check the sterility of the apparatus, which is presumed to be sterile when all of the spores are killed. The spout (27) (Fig. 7, not shown) of the bag is rigid and has threads (28) so that after removal of the seal 29, a screw cap, snap cap &c. can be applied to reseal the bag. |
