Novel N-alkylazaindoles of the general formula wherein X represents an aza ring member at any one of the 4 to 7 ring positions and R represents a lower alkyl of 1 to 3 carbon atoms or an allyl group, and the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, are prepared by reacting a reactive alkyl ester e.g. alkyl sulphate, chloride bromide or iodide with an azaindole. Pharmaceutical compositions having antidepressant activity and containing the above compounds are administered orally or parenterally. |
