The insulator takes the form of (1) a surge arrester with said insulating body constituting the surge arrestor housing, (2) a cap and pin type insulator, (3) a rod type insulator or (4) a cable sealing end insulator having a filler material contained by a housing constituted by said insulating body. Three examples of suitable glass compositions are given.
