A disc brake assembly comprises a rotatable unit formed by one or more discs 3, a non rotatable unit formed by a plurality of opposed pairs of brake pads 6 each pad formed as an integral unit with a friction lining, each pad being slidably mounted on a shaft 9 parallel to the rotational axis of a wheel to be braked and having on one edge a projection 18 and a corresponding recess 19 on the other edge, a closed chain of the brake pads being formed round each face of the disc, a plurality of rocker arms 11 each bearing on lateral portions of two pads adjacent the adjacent edges thereof and a supporting unit 16 which couples the non rotatable unit to an axle for the wheel and includes actuating means 14 for the brake. The rocker arms 11 are pivoted on shafts 12 and may each be actuated by a single piston 14, as shown, or by a main piston for normal braking and by a second piston for emergency braking, the main and second pistons being coupled by flanges and including a wear take up device. The friction linings may be sintered or brazed to its pad; the non-rotatable unit may be of beryllium or an alloy thereof and the unit 16 of a light alloy. The unit 16 may be protected by heat insulators against heat transference from the braking units. |
