A building framework comprises a hollow upright interconnected with a hollow cross member by means of an element constantly urged by a return element to retract within the end of the cross member and having a transversely elongated head engageable in a slot in the upright which upon rotation of the cross member engages behind flanges delimiting the slot, the element being movable to its extended position whereby it may be so engaged in the slot, by operating means which acts against the return element. In one embodiment, the horizontal framing members 2 have at their heads rods 13 inwardly retractable under spring pressure, the outer ends of the rods each being provided with a head 15 of prismatic shape. To connect a horizontal member 2 to a vertical framing member a wedge 22 is inserted through a slotted part of the member 2 to cause the rods to be displaced outwardly against the spring pressure. Each head 15 is then passed through a slot 6 in the vertical framing member I and into a wider channel behind the slot, after which the member 2 is rotated about its longitudinal axis from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 3. Removal of the wedge 22 then allows the head to grip the walls of the member 1 on each side of the slot 6. In a modification, Figs. 13 to 18, not shown, a square portion behind the head engages the walls of the slot 6 to prevent rotation of the horizontal member 2 after it has been installed. The application of the invention to framing members of modified sectional shapes are described with reference to Figs. 19-21 (not shown). |
