Sponge iron is compressed into the shape of an electrode which is then used in a conventional electric arc furnace. The sponge iron particles are fed into a funnel-shaped vessel, at the bottom end of which is a pair of compacting rolls. The partly compacted sponge is the then further compacted by another pair of rolls. The electrodes formed may be used in separate lengths or may be continuously fed into the furnace. They may also be baked using the heat of the furnace gases, and they may have a central core of flux material such as dolomite or lime. Rapid melting occurs with one sponge iron electrode in combination with two graphite electrodes.
|
