The moulded object is made by pouring a mixture of the liquid phenolic or urea resin, a foaming agent, a curing agent and the oil into a mould containing granules or fibres of the filler, closing the mould and allowing the resin to foam and harden between the filler so as to embed it in a matrix of the foamed resin. The filler may be pumice, exfoliated or expanded clay, expanded slate, granite chips, shale, power station waste, perlite granules, bagasse or glass fibre filaments. In the examples a mixture of phenolic resin, non-ionic wetting agent, castor oil or a mineral oil and di-isopropyl ether (as blowing agent) together with an acid catalyst (aq. p-toluenesulphonic acid) was poured over expanded clay granules in a mould and allowed to form an expanded moulded resin composition. |
