Tyre building machinery includes apparatus for preparing the plies of fabric. This is arranged so that one operator in his operating position can conveniently carry out all the operations of feeding, cutting to size, metering and splicing of the plies. The apparatus consists of a bias cutter which produces pieces of the correct widths. These are moved onto a table, and there is a movable splicing platform near the table. In one position this platform is placed edge-to-edge with the table and in another position it is moved out of alignment. The platform is positioned over a conveyor in its first position. The table and platform slope down toward that edge of the conveyor which is remote from the bias cutter.
