Lipid-lowering aryloxy(thio)alkanoic acid derivs. Title cpds. have the formula (I): (where R1 is 1-14C alkyl or 5-7C cycloalkyl; R2 is H or Me; R3 is OH, OM where M is an alkali or alk. earth metal, 1-3C alkoxy or amino; X and Y are O or S). A pref. cpd. is 2-(6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-dibenzofuran-2-yloxy)-octanoic acid and its alkali(ne earth)metal salts. Cpds. lower lipid and cholesterol levels with only a slight tendency to hepatomegaly.
