Lubricant film supporting surface - has elastic compressible coating fixed to harder surface underneath

The surface supports a lubricant film for a vehicle bearing. It has a coating of elastic compressible material (5), fixed to a surface of harder material (3). On the latter surface there can be one or more raised ridges formed (4), of gradually varying height, and running at a constant angle to the flow direction of the lubricant over the surface. The compressible material can be clad with a thin layer of flexible wear-resistant material. Either the bearing journal, or the bush in which it works, can have a surface and layer as described. The surface can be used for an air cushion vehicle, the hard base being enclosed by a ridge running round it.
