Aerobic prodn. of compost from household rubbish - by addn. of sewage sludge, and agitation at controlled temp.

A mixt. of finely divided household rubbish with 35wt.% of sludge from water purificn. is loaded into a horizontal reactor, for the prodn. of compost by aerobic processes. The sludge is in the form of small rods with a length of 5-20 cm and a dia. of 1-5 mm, produced by extrusion. The mixt. in the reactor is agitated and maintained in contact with the air. The temp. is measured constantly and the stream of air drawn through the reactor in the direction of the outlet for the compost, is controlled as a function of the measured temp. inside the reactor. Used to produce compost from organic material such as household waste and sludge from biological purificn. systems, by aerobic bacterial breakdown, so that the most favourable perceptual ratio of C:N together with moisture content is achieved.
