<p>A submersible vessel for use at great depth or on the sea bed is based on two or more pressure-resistant spherical cabins linked by interfacial hatches and enclosed in a common elongated ball which is not itself watertight, having permanently open ports fore and aft, and hence not subjected to differential hydrostatic pressure. The external hull can therefore be of relatively light gauge (5 mm) material, and only the cellular cabins are built of thick (70 mm) strong material, specifically titanium or glass fibre reinforced polyester. Small reservoirs of compressed air and water ballast are mounted in the outer hull. The ends of the hull may be filled with expanded polyurethane resin for increased rigidity. Pref. each cabin has intercommunicating and external hatches. /2.</p> |
