The invention relates to a process and to a device for the continuous pretreatment of open-width fabric webs made of natural fibres or blends thereof with synthetic fibres, in particular for desizing, boiling, caustisation, bleaching or the like without the risk of creasing even in sensitive articles. Its purpose is to create a simple and versatile process which can be carried out in particular with short treatment liquor concentrations which can be easily managed. For this purpose, it is proposed according to the invention to subject the fabric webs after impregnation with the treatment liquid at a liquor ratio of 1 : 1 to 1.5 : 1 to a steam treatment in two mutually separate regions, wherein in the first region a treatment with a steam/air mixture is carried out at a temperature of up to 60-70 DEG C for a period of about 10 minutes with a loose strand of guiding and in the second region a steam treatment in pure saturated steam is carried out at a temperature of about 100-103 DEG C for a period of about 2 minutes with a tight strand of guiding, and then to subject the fabric webs to a wash treatment and, if desired, further treatments.
