PURPOSE:To effectively reduce the ageing deterioration of effective bromine in an aq. NaBrO2 soln. by an easy method by adding I2 or an I compd. to the aq. NaBrO2 soln. CONSTITUTION:I2 or an I compd. such as MI, MIO3, MIO4, etc., [where M is an alkali(earth) metal] is added to the aq. NaBrO2 soln. to stabilize the soln. The compd. stable to heavy metals which are considered to be coexistent as an unstable factor in the aq. NaBrO2 soln. is preferably used as the additive. KI having practically high purity, having high solubility in water, and which is comparatively inexpensive is most preferably used. The compds. are dissolved in 1 N-NaOH, and the soln. is added to the aq. NaBrO2 soln. The amt. to be added is regulated to 0.01-10wt%, expressed in terms of I, and preferably to 0.03-3wt% when the compd. is added to a commercial aq. NaBrO2 soln. (contg. about 165g/l effective bromine).
