PURPOSE:To obtain an ultrasonic image of an optional enlargement ratio by providing a means for varying continuously a scanning area of a sample. CONSTITUTION:An acoustic lens 1 is vibrated in the X direction through a driving part 3 by an acoustic lens scanning signal from a scan controlling circuit 2, and a sample base 5 is moved in the Y direction orthogonal to the X direction through a driving part 6 by a sample base scanning signal. Based on an output of a position sensor 7, a position in the X direction of the lens 1 is detected, and a signal processing circuit 8 is controlled. The circuit 8 transmits successively a high frequency pulse to the lens 1, and an ultrasonic wave is converted in the lens 1, and projected in a shape of a spot to a sample 4 through a medium 9. A reflected wave is brought to a sound collection by the lens 1 and converted to an electric signal, and an ultrasonic image of the sample 4 is displayed on a monitor 10 through the circuit 8.
