PURPOSE:To prevent the adhesion of dust on a heat transfer element and remove collected dust by employing clean gas periodically through back washing by a method wherein heating gas is made to flow through the heat transfer element into the opposed direction of gas to be heated while a filter is provided at the end surface of the side of the dust including gas introducing port of the heat transfer element. CONSTITUTION:The dust in low-temperature dust-containing gas introduced from a hood 15, is collected by a filter 28 upon passing through the filter 28 and the gas becomes clean gas, then, the clean gas is heated by a heat transfer element main body 26, thereafter, is contacted with a catalyst layer 27 to make harmful constituents harmless and the temperature thereof is increased further, then, flows out of another hood 16. High-temperature clean gas, introduced from the hood 17, contacts with the catalyst layer 27 and activates again the catalyst layer 27 whose catalystic activity is deteriorated by being spoiled by poisons or the like, and heats the heat transfer element main body 26, then, passes through the filter 28 and flows out of the hood 18. A rotary shaft 20 is rotated continuously while the heat transfer element main body 26 and the filler 28 are rotated in conjunction with the rotary shaft 20. The clean gas, introduced from the hood 17, passes through the filter 28 from the back side thereof whereby the dust is removed by the back washing of the clean gas and is discharged to the outside of a system together with the gas passing through the hood 18.
