The invention relates to a press, especially for pressing ceramic tiles and the like from a powder material, the pressing tool being composed of a die plate cross member and a pressing cross member and the die plate cross member being fastened in a shock-absorbing fashion via sprung supporting elements to the pressing stand and the pressing cross member of the pressing tool being connected to the upper pressing cross member via sprung drivers, a locking device being provided between the two cross members. This results in a reduction in the idle stroke and makes it possible to increase the number of strokes. Jolts and vibrations are avoided as the die plates are closed (Fig. 1). <IMAGE>
