PURPOSE:To make it possible for a low speed engine to effect engine brake by providing such an arrangement that upper limit value setting means and a judging means are provided, and a control means stops speed shift control when the result of judgment exceeds an upper value. CONSTITUTION:When the degree of depression of an accelerator pedal is reduced so as to decrease the opening degree of an accelerator, a control means is likely to control the speed shift so that a continuously variable transmission is operated in a direction in which the rotational speed of an engine lowers (the speed shift ratio increases). The control means greatly increases the speed ratio in a low speed range so as to allow the rotational speed of the engine to approach a desire value. A judging means determines that an upper limit value is exceeded if it is so, and accordingly, the speed shift control by the control means is stopped at that time point. That is, if it is compared with a conventional manual shift drive vehicle, there is effected the same condition as that a gear is shifted down in some degree while turning off the accelerator. Accordingly, even with similar speed reduction, engine brake is effected in a low speed range of the vehicle.
