PURPOSE:To provide the subject compound useful as a raw material for synthetic vitamin E, etc., in one step and in a high yield without requiring the circulation of a large amount of a catalyst by oxidizing 2,3,5-trimethylphenol with oxygen gas in the presence of a catalyst comprising a combination of a copper compound and a specific compound. CONSTITUTION:2,3,5-Trimethylphenol is oxidized with oxygen gas in the presence of a catalyst comprising (1) a combination of a copper compound and the salt of a hydroxylamine with an inorganic acid or a mixture thereof, (2) a combination of the copper oxide and an oxime or a mixture of the oxime and an inorganic acid or (3) a combination of the copper compound and an amine or a mixture of the amine and an inorganic acid preferably in a 4-10C primary alcohol solvent at 40-150 deg.C to provide the objective compound. The copper compound used as the catalyst is preferably a chloride such as cuprous chloride or cupric chloride. |
