PURPOSE:To produce the subject compound useful as a perfumery material or an intermediate for pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals and amino acids, in high efficiency, by reacting toluene with carbon monoxide in the presence of a rhodium compound under irradiation with light having a specific wavelength. CONSTITUTION:Phenylacetaldehyde can be produced by reacting toluene with carbon monoxide in the presence of a rhodium compound [e.g., chlorocarbonyl bis(trimethylphosphine)rhodium] under the irradiation with light having wavelength of >=325nm, preferably 325-400nm (generated by applying a filter or monochromator to a mercury lamp or xenon lamp to cut the light out of the above wavelength range). The objective phenylacetaldehyde is easily produced from toluene and carbon monoxide available at low costs. |
