New polyene(18)-annulene cpds. are of formula (I). In formulae (I) and (II), R = (18)-annulene ring of formula (II); R2-3 = H or 1-12C alkyl or together = a 6-12C aliphatic or 5-14C (hetero)-aromatic ring; and R1 = a polyene structural unit of formula (III). In formulae (III), R4-5 = H, 1-6C alkyl (opt. substd. by F and/or Cl), F, Cl, CN or Ph (opt. substd. by 1-6C alkyl, F, Cl, No or NMe2; n and p = 1-50; q = 0 or 1; and r = 1-3. The prepn. of (I) is claimed whereby pyrroles of formula (IV) and polyenes of formula (V) are reacted together to form (I). R6 = an aldehyde gp., a 5-7C aliphatic or olefinically unsatd. ring (opt. substd. by 1-6C alkyl), phenyl (opt. substd. by 1-6C alk(en)yl, 1-6C alkenyl-phenyl, F, Cl, NO2 or NMe2) or a 4-5C heterocycle (opt. substd. by 1-6C alkyl). USE - (I) are used in the prodn. of dyestuffs and electrical conductors; and in form of mouldings, films or fibres (claimed).
